People in neighborhoods surrounding Calbas felt a strong explosion between 10 and 11 a.m. on Monday. Windows on some houses in the direct neighborhood of the Gavilan dump in Calbas were shattered by the impact, in one home a part of the ceiling caved in.
Cars on the Gavilan property were badly damaged by the impact. Employees of the Department of Public Works apparently had been trying to dispose of explosives - old fireworks and illegal fireworks that had been confiscated, when something went wrong, the result was an explosion which could be compared to a 1.1 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale.

After the explosion the police closed off the area, fearing more explosions. Three men were injured, two were not even able to walk. Neighbors said it was not the first time they heard explosions coming from the area, but this was the largest one to date.
Minister of Justice Arthur Dowers drove around the neighborhood of Calbas after the incident. He said he will meet with the disaster bureau and other concerned organizations on what had taken place. An investigation is ongoing to determine the risk of another explosion and to find out what had gone wrong.
