One of the island's more popular cooks, Maria Petit introduced secrets of Aruba's cuisine to students at Zadkine Food & Business in Rotterdam, The Netherlands while on a family visit in the motherland. Minister of Public Health and Sport of Aruba, dr. Richard Visser, who is on an official visit in Holland was also present at the workshop, together with Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba, Edwin Abath.
Maria taught the students how to make "pastechi" and Ponche Crema, a local version of eggnog, which contains alcohol, most often rum. She was assisted by Nico van der Meer, who has for 18 years been an instructor at Zadkine College. Van der Meer worked from 1985 to 1994 on Aruba at among others Manchebo Beach Resort and Chez Mathilde. He also taught cooking classes to former Lago employees looking for a new career when the refinery shut down in 1985. Maria has hosted cooking shows on television, has a DVD-series and has authored a book. Every weekend she is present at Superfood, where she promotes different products with advice on how to prepare them, and how to combine them with other dishes, among others. At present there are 23 students from Zadkine College working as trainees on Aruba.
