Department of Public Works Director Jossy Figaroa said in an interview that the public tender for the two remaining city trams will take place on January 23. A tender has already taken place, but the companies that participated did not comply with all requirements and a new tender was issued. The original deadline was January 16, but one of the European companies asked for an extention, which the government granted. The city trams, which will take about two months to build, are different to the double-decker tram which is to arrive on Aruba by the end of February. The law to incorporate the tram into the island's traffic legislation is in the making and would have to be approved by Parliament to allow the smooth movement of traffic in the Oranjestad city center. The government has not taken the decision yet if the Main Street will be open to traffic on evenings once the city center renovation and upgrading project is completed. The decision will be taken by a team that will be in charge of maintenance, cleaning and security for the Main Street.
