Last month Minister Arthur Dowers visited various organizations in the U.S.A. to get better acquainted with the American education system and seek out more opportunities for Aruba's students to continue their education in the U.S. In addition, the goal of this visit was to establish ties between institutions from the two countries.
The minister was accompanied by University of Aruba Rector, dr. Glenn Thode and the Department of Education's Acting Director, drs. Anne Marie Proveyer. One of the institutions Minister Dowers and his delegation visited is the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where they met with different authorities and got them interested in contributing to the development of education on Aruba. Among others the delegation had a meeting with the executive director of the Latin American Scholarship Program of American Universities (LASPAU), a not-for-profit organization which is affiliated to Harvard University. Senior Lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education, James Honan also met with the delegation for a discussion on his area of expertise, which is education and investigation, financial management of non-profit institutions, performance and management of organizations and institutions of academic education. The visit at Harvard ended with a meeting with Professor Fernando M. Reimers. The professor is of Venezuelan descent and has much influence at this institution, where he holds the prestigious posts of Ford Foundation Professor of International Education and Director of Global Education and of International Education Policy. His work entails among others instruction on the relationship between politics of education, democratic citizenship, improvement of instruction methods and innovation in education and social entrepreneurship. His course "Education Policy Analysis and Research in Comparative Perspective" focuses on the main challenges faced by education in areas of development. Professor Reimers was impressed by the changes Minister Dowers wishes for academic education on Aruba and expressed a serious interest in sending Harvard University students to the island to carry out an academic investigation on the education development. Minister Dowers presented Professor Reimers with a painting by local artist Elvis Tromp as a token of appreciation Minister Arthur Dowers was invited by Professor Reimers to return to Harvard as the keynote speaker at the annual Harvard University School of Education conference, entitled ‘Global Education Leadership Opportunities’, which takes place January 24 and 25 at the university in Boston. Minister Dowers will present a speech with the title "Inside the Mind of a Minister of Education; the challenges of decision making in a world of growing needs, competing priorities and limited resources". During this visit, he is accompanied by dr. Glenn Thode y Professor Ryan Peterson, who is also an invited speaker at the conference. The Goverment of Aruba congratulates Minister Arthur Dowers on this achievement and wishes the Education Minister and Aruba university representatives a fruitful conference.
